Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is unique about e-PhotoMemories' scanning service?
e-PhotoMemories includes photo restoration services in price
of scanning the photo. This can be done because we use technology to automate
much of the restoration and pass the savings on to the customer.
2. Can my photos be saved in image formats other than TIFF
and JPEG?
Yes, we can store the images in other formats. However, we
have spent much time researching the formats to use and we feel TIFF and JPEG
will be the most durable over time. The next best choice might be PDF however
it is a proprietary Adobe format.
3. What does dots per inch (dpi) mean?
Dots per inch is used in relation to the resolution for printing. It
expresses the number of drops of ink that can be deposited on the paper in
both the horizontal and vertical directions. Today's printers can do an
excellent job with images that are stored in 300 dpi.
4. What does pixels per inch mean?
Picture elements (pixels) per inch is used in relation to the resolution of
the scanning process. Scanning a photo that is 4"x6" at 600 pixels per inch
with 24 bits per pixel results in a TIFF file that is about 25.2 million
bytes, (25.2 MB), in size. This file can be compressed using LZW lossless
compression to about 11.3 MB without loosing picture information.
5. Why don't you use JPEG for the large files?
JPEG compression looses picture detail in the compression process.
Furthermore, if a JPEG is opened, edited, then recompressed even more picture
detail is lost. We sellected the TIFF format to preserve your options for
using the images in the future.
Compressed JPEG files are provided for you to attach to e-mail or put on a
web site.
